Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a great tool in helping patients relax and feel comfortable throughout
longer appointments and procedures. Appointments are over in no time at all when sedation
dentistry is used! Our office uses two types of sedation – oral and nitrous. Your dentist can help
you determine which type of sedation is right for you if you are needing sedation throughout a
dental visit. In cases of severe dental fears and anxiety, sedation may be recommended as well.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is taken in pill form. It starts to take effect quickly and allows you to feel relaxed
and at ease throughout your visit. You won’t be bothered by surrounding sounds or smells while
under sedation, however, you are able to respond to the dentist if needed. You may remember
little to nothing about your visit due to the sedation. The oral sedation can take some time to
wear off, so a driver may be needed to take you home after your appointment.

Nitrous Sedation

Nitrous sedation is our most common and is often referred to as laughing gas. This is our mildest
form of sedation. The sedation is administered through a face mask and starts to take effect
within minutes of wearing the mask. The sedation calms your nerves and helps you feel
comfortable during your appointment. You may feel drowsy and remember bits and pieces from
the visit. Once the visit is complete, the mask is removed, and the sedation will begin to wear
off almost immediately. With nitrous sedation, you can resume your normal activities following
your appointment.
